What is Paxil?

The Antidepressant (SSRI) Taking The World By Storm

Paxil is Glaxosmithkline’s SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) to compete with Pfizer’s Prozac. The two drugs pretty much do the same thing, inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin neurotransmitter levels in the brain. By regulating serotonin levels, it is thought to normalize the chemical imbalance that is known to cause a variety of mental health issues, first and foremost: depression.  Since inception, the drug and other drugs in its class have been prescribed to millions of patients around the world. There have been a tremendous amount of reported benefits and as with any reward in the pharmaceuticals industry, a very large amount of reported side effects.

Some of these side effects were reported by Glaxosmithkline, but others, such as birth defects were not reported until recently. Those who were prescribed Paxil and experienced birth defects such as cleft lip or respiratory distress may be entitled to compensation, it is advised you seek the assistance of expert legal counsel, the legal team at Clear Injury is here to help!

Paxil’s Warning from the Food and Drug Administration

As per medical protocol, the classification of Paxil is bound by categories A to D. These categories are more or less defined by its regard to pregnancy safety among women. From a not-so-distant past in 2005, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) mandated to Glaxosmithkline, the main producer of the drug Paxil, to change their drug category of the drug to D.

However, the Glaxo must have, at some sort, refused to accommodate the grave consequences at hand and continued promoting the drug under the B banner. It was then that later that year, several reports and complaints were filed against the Glaxo for negligence in allowing to banner out the present pregnant-friendly tone when it was supposed to be at risk level D banner.

Such event was noised out by the previous review of the FDA to Paxil as a stronger med for pregnant women. Unfortunately, as a result, many babies were lost during that year – thanks to GlaxoSmith’s negligence. Accordingly, the manufacturing company faced and won some lawsuits and promised to abide by the conditions set by the FDA. For sure, they must have learned their lesson.

Unheeded Warnings

Perhaps you might be wondering where the FDA got the courage for warning. Actually, the stationed scientists in the labs paid off by the FDA conducted a research on the tolerance of the drug among pregnant women. The immediate result was utterly alarming. Thus, the FDA made no second thoughts in sending all throughout the samples and the results of the tests to no less than the company. Despite the effort, the company rejected such claims pushed on with its stubborn ways. Perhaps we can label the rest as history now.

For those who survived the scratchy claws of the Paxil, they should be bound to share the burdens currently bore by their offspring. And, we are not talking now, we’re talking forever here:

  • Chronic Diseases. The child has indeed survived. That is bellowing good news! The bad news is, the child suffers unusual and sometimes untreatable diseases like firbroelastosis, aortic stenosis, leukemia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome and many more new names you can think of.

  • Weak body features. The effects of taking Paxil during pregnancy can be highly damaging such that the child becomes the living indication of it. Due to the lethal suppositions of the drug to the helpless fetus, the DNA development of the child is altered, damaged or even added.

  • Disrupted Fetal Development. The Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) is a drug that has SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) qualities. In other words, it is a strongly-designed drug for depression, anxiety and even low psychological disposition treatment. Remember serotonin, the main cause of our joys? Literally, that’s what it is. It is the element juice in the body that is highly heated up by the Paxil like cold pie in an oven. Imagine the strong electrical signals facilitated by the drug in your brain. Though, that is fairly acceptable for us, big ones, for the fetus, it is deadly.

I’ve experienced birth defects while taking Paxil. What do I do now?
